Apply Nitrogen (N) ASAP as the response to N will decline from August onwards by a considerable amount.
August soils build their own organic N naturally so on low stocked farms with adequate silage this could suffice. It is recommended to apply 20-25 units N ASAP if silage is needed.
Slurry should be spread on low index fields (Index 1 & 2) or silage fields. N in the spring is better utilized than N in the summer , however by using Low Emmision Slurry the farmer can increase the units of N uptake.
Closing paddocks for the winter:
Start closing paddocks from the start of October onward. Aim to have over half your farm closed by the beginning of November depending on the land (close 2 weeks earlier on wet lands). Closing at this stage will allow for adequate cover of grass next spring.
Grass covers can be inspected early in September and blanket spread with 24 units of N.
